Carpenter ant swarm in Massachusetts

Carpenter ants in Massachusetts have begun to swarm this season. The exact time frame for these swarms varies each year depending on the weather, but there are some common explanations for why a carpenter ant swarm in Massachusetts tends to begin in the spring, sometimes in May.

Looking at the behavior and biology of ants, we know these pests like to feed on protein and sugar to expand their colonies. If you've ever spilled honey or anything sweet on your kitchen counter, you probably know what I mean. Ants will be all over it within minutes.

Carpenter ants may also feed on other live or dead insects, in addition to plant matter outdoors. So why do you tend to see more Massachusetts carpenter ant activity in May, as opposed to April? Take a look at your yard for the answer. Trees, bushes, and some flowers usually don't come to life until May. That's what helps to increase carpenter ant activity in Massachusetts. The more food sources they have, the quicker they can reproduce and swarm.

Identifying a carpenter ant can be tricky for many homeowners, especially compared to a Massachusetts termite swarm. Both have wings and may be spotted indoors. But a Massachusetts pest control professional like Burgess Pest Management can easily spot the different and likely identity the source of the infestation.

Carpenter ants have segmented bodies, hind wings shorter than the front, and elbowed antennae. Termite swarmers have non-segmented bodies, straight antennae, and translucent wings of equal length.
