Small pests, big problems: Termites are constantly on the go, eating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, rain or shine, even in winter. Because of their persistence, termites can inflict devastating damage on homes that in most cases will not be covered by homeowners insurance. With the average cost of repairs to termite damage averaging around $3,000, it's wise to know how termites in Massachusetts gain access to your home in the first place.

How Termites Get Inside

Cracks and crevices: An opening of about 1/32nd of an inch - the average thickness of a business card - is all termites need to make their way inside. Cracks in foundation or between bricks, even small holes in concrete blocks, are an open invitation.

Wood to soil contact: Because subterranean termites (the most common termites in Massachusetts) stay underground until they find wood, they often make their way into homes through wood-to-ground contact. Common areas include door frames, porch steps, and deck supports or posts.

Gaps around pipes and utility chases: As with cracks in foundation, termites need very little space to squeeze through. Additionally, any leakages or standing water in these areas can make them all the more attractive.

Openings around windows and doors: Cracks, gaps, and loose or broken screens roll out the welcome mat for termites. Swarming termites are attracted to light and thus are commonly found in these areas.

Tree to house: If termites are busy making quick work of a tree close to your home, they can easily move from the tree to the inside of the house using any of the methods discussed above.

Now that you know how termites get inside, it's time to stop them. Sealing cracks and crevices, limiting water sources, and keeping gutters and pipes clear are good places to start, but there's truly no substitution for a seasoned pest professional.
