After this humid 90-degree weekend, we’re not the only ones feeling the heat – warm, damp weather has an impact on pests as well. Many pests in Massachusetts thrive in humid conditions for a number of reasons.
One of the main benefits of humid weather is moisture. Pests like mosquitoes, ticks, roaches, silverfish, centipedes, and earwigs, among others, need water to survive and to breed. Mosquitoes, for example, breed in shallow amounts of standing water like puddles, damp piles of leaves and yard debris, clogged gutters, and areas of water runoff.
The increased temperatures also help plants to bloom, providing crucial food sources to a variety of pests, like ants. Ants are constantly foraging for food; blooming plants provide the protein and carbohydrates they need to sustain and grow their colony. When ant colonies expand, we’re more likely to see them in and around our homes.
Like people, some pests may prefer to escape the heat, which can drive them inside for cooler conditions – and a pest problem can put a real damper on your summer.
