Massachusetts termite swarm
Despite the fact that it's still winter, termites may have an early swarm season in Massachusetts. It's not completely uncommon for this to happen, but a Massachusetts termite swarm generally occurs in the spring.
An early termite swarm season is usually indicative of a mild winter. Although we've experienced period of frigid air and snow, compared to last winter, this has been a much easier season for pests.
Termite swarms are the reproductive stage of termites. Although they will die on their own (usually near a source of light such a window frame), they are indicating that a larger problem exists. Since termites are subterranean, we don't commonly see them unless a swarmer gives us this "courtesy warning sign."
If you look at the picture above, you can see how it's easy to mistake a Massachusetts termite swarm for a flying ant. Both look similar, but have some key differences in body shape and wing size.
