Here throughout the South Shore of Massachusetts, as cooler temperatures begin to takeover, we see an increase in calls to the office for rodents. This year the Professional Pest Management Alliance has designated the week of October 23rd - October 29th to be National 'Rodent Awareness Week'.

With that in mind, we'd like to share some of the following rodent awareness tips for you and your family:

  • Conduct a regular inspection in your home and look for signs of rodents - specifically look for droppings along walls, in your kitchen, on top of beams or studs and inside containers and cabinets.

  • Rodent gnaw marks are recognizable by their tiny size, roughness and vertical appearance. Rats and mice need to gnaw every day to prevent their teeth from growing too large.

  • Rodents may nest in insulation or use insulation to make nests so checking attics and crawlspaces is strongly recommended. They may breed there for a long period of time without being detected.

  • Look for holes and cracks in your homes foundation as well as any screen damage to windows or doors. An opening could exist that may not be readily visible. Be aware that mice can squeeze their little bodies through openings no bigger than a dime!

  • Rodents scurry through the walls and only come out after dark. They may leave the home during the daylight hours and return to look for water and food when everyone is asleep.
  • Eliminating an infestation as soon as it is discovered is paramount to preventing extensive damage to your home. (Did you know - Rodents are also potential vectors of several diseases?) If you see a mouse or rat inside your home or business, chances are, there's more and you'll want to eliminate them before an infestation establishes

Use the tips above, if you find rodents in your South Shore area home, call the professsionals at Burgess Pest Management today.
