While a mouse problem is tricky to self-treat, there are preventive measures you can take on your own.

Mice are notoriously persistent. Once they’re in your house, they can reproduce at lightning speed, cause structural damage, and spread disease. While the best method of control is to call the professionals, there are some do-it-yourself measures you can take to prevent mice in your Canton, MA home.

Mouse Prevention You Can DIY in Canton, MA

INSIDE

  • Don't keep pet food and water bowls on the floor, when possible. Dry pet food should be stored in airtight containers.
  • Do regularly clean counters, stovetops, ovens, cabinets and dining areas.
  • Do keep floors clean, especially in kitchen and dining areas-- including beneath stoves and refrigerators.
  • Don't leave food or used dishes out overnight.
  • Do store pantry items like cereal, grain, nuts, and seeds in sealed containers-- preferably glass.
  • Do consider a trash bin that closes tightly (button- or pedal-operated, not swing top) and take out garbage regularly.
  • Do keep stored items off the floor. If a mouse can chew threw it, try to keep it above ground level. Cardboard, linen, and paper items are desirable nesting materials.

OUTSIDE

  • Do ensure trash cans close securely. Metal is usually better than plastic when possible.
  • Don't keep bird feeders. If you must have them, keep them far from the house and consider a catch tray. Clean up fallen seed regularly and store bird feed in sealed containers.
  • Don’t leave pet food or water outside.
  • Do clean up fruits or vegetables fallen from trees or garden plants.
  • Do store firewood or lumber off the ground and a good distance from the house.
  • Do keep plants near your home neatly trimmed and mulch beds tidy. Trim back branches that come in contact with your house.
