West Nile Virus in Brookline MAWhat is West Nile Virus?

WNV is a virus spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito; mosquitoes contract the virus when feeding on infected birds. It cannot be spread by person-to-person contact or contact with birds or other animals.

What are the Symptoms of WNV?

Common symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, headache, body aches, nausea and vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands. Some may experience a rash that appears on the chest, stomach, or back.

In rare cases, those infected with WNV may develop severe illness such as encephalitis or meningitis.

How to Protect Yourself from WNV

There is no vaccine or cure for West Nile Virus; mosquito bite prevention is the best defense against infection.

  • Avoid being outdoors during dawn and dusk, peak times of mosquito activity

  • Wear long sleeves and pants when possible

  • Use EPA-approved repellents

  • Remove sources of standing water such as wading pools, wheelbarrows, flower pots, tire swings, and other vessels that collect water. Keep gutters clear and yard free of leaf litter, and check outdoor faucets/hoses for leaks.

  • Keep mosquitoes outside: Inspect screens for tears or holes and make sure they fit securely. Keep windows and doors closed.
