It may sound strange, but winter is the time to get a head start on Massachusetts mosquito prevention.

For New Englanders, winter is about being prepared for anything from a raging blizzard to a 50-degree day, and everything in between – Often all in the same week. We have a lot on our minds this time of year, and mosquito control is typically not topping that list; however, the fact remains that mosquito activity in our region is becoming nearly a year-round problem, and it’s never too soon to take preventative measures. Here are some tips for getting a head start on Massachusetts mosquito control this winter:

Winter Mosquito Control Massachusetts Rhode IslandRemove Water Sources. Removing water sources around your property reduces available mosquito breeding grounds. Buckets, storage bins, watering cans, bird baths, and even tarps or tire swings, can provide enough water for a female mosquito to lay her hundreds of eggs. Inspect outdoor plumbing for leaks to prevent pooling and keep gutters clear of leaf litter or debris.

Winter Wonderland(scaping). Reduce harborage areas throughout your yard by trimming overgrown grass or dense vegetation. Prune bushes and trees to let natural light in – mosquitoes prefer the dark. Fill in low-lying areas where water might collect during rain or snow melt.

Make Sure They Stay Out. It’s a good time to inspect all windows, doors, and screens to make sure everything is intact and securely sealed to keep mosquitoes from sneaking inside when the weather warms. This will also prevent rodents and overwintering insects gaining access during the cold months.

Finally? Call Burgess Pest Management! Ongoing mosquito control through the warm months is key to eliminating adult mosquito populations. The fewer adults there are, the fewer overwintering immature mosquitoes there will be – and that means you have a lot less to worry about when it comes time to enjoy your outdoor space. Our seasonal, environmentally-friendly treatments start as soon as the weather breaks, so request a free estimate today to get on the schedule for spring!

If you already have a Pad Protection Plan, it's easy to upgrade - just let us know you'd like to add mosquito and tick control.
