2022 is right around the corner, and the time has come when many of us are making our resolutions for the year ahead. Of all the goals we can set at the start of a new year, pest-proofing our homes frequently does not make the list- but if you’re aiming for a healthier lifestyle, less stress, or saving money (or all of the above!), keeping your home pest-free is a key component. Here are some tips for leaving your pest problems in the past this New Year:
Store Holiday Decorations Properly. When it’s time to pack away the wreaths and ornaments, store your holiday décor in plastic bins with tightly fitted lids instead of cardboard boxes. If you can, keep the bins off of the floor.
Keep Things Clean. A cleaner, more organized home is a common New Year’s resolution – and an essential part of keeping pests out. Regularly wiping counters and dining areas, sweeping or vacuuming, and taking out the garbage helps to reduce food sources. Store pantry items in airtight containers and keep pet dishes off the floor when possible.
Seal it Up. Pests can gain access to your home through very small openings. Seal cracks and crevices around your foundation and any openings around pipes and utility chases. Make sure screens are intact and that windows and doors close securely; consider door sweeps to close the gap between door and floor.
Stay Dry. Many household pests are attracted to moisture. Check for plumbing leaks or clogged drains and eliminate standing water. Sources of standing water inside your home include sinks, bathtubs, pet dishes, even houseplants.
