The week of May 7th, 2023 is Tick Awareness Week - the perfect time to learn about ticks in Massachusetts and how to protect yourself.
Ticks are not only one of the most annoying creatures New Englanders encounter all year; they can also pose serious health risks to people and pets. Whether you're a homeowner, outdoor enthusiast, pet parent, or all of the above, it's important to know about tick bite prevention in order to reduce your risk of tick-borne diseases.
Tick-Borne Diseases in New England
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans through the bite of an infected tick, commonly the deer tick.
Babesiosis is an infection of the red blood cells, caused by parasites called Babesia.
Anaplasmosis is a disease caused by bacteria transferred via tick bite.
Less common, but still found in New England, are Tularemia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Powassan virus. Common symptoms of tick-borne diseases include rash, fever, chills, body aches or joint pain, headache, nausea and/or vomiting, fatigue, and loss of appetite.
Tick Bite Prevention
Be aware of where ticks live. Avoid tall grass and brush and stick to the center of trails.
Proper clothing. Wear long sleeves, pants tucked into tall socks, and boots. Opt for light colors to make ticks easier to spot.
Use repellent. Use EPA-approved repellents and consult your veterinarian for the best treatment options for pets.
Body checks. Check for ticks frequently, including on pets that go outside.
Safe removal. Learn how to safely remove a tick if you are bitten. Watch for symptoms of tick-borne disease and consult your physician if symptoms arise.
