It's that time of year: Overwintering insects in Massachusetts are making their way inside homes to hunker down for the cold months.

We've been getting a lot of calls about stink bugs, lady bugs, and other types of overwintering insects lately. The cold snaps that are trademarks of erratic New England autumn are reminding these pests that they must find shelter for winter or risk death. Our warm homes are ideal destinations, particularly insulated attics and basements.

Once inside, these insects don't do much except nestle in and wait for spring-- but that doesn't stop homeowners from cringing at the sight of them as they sneak in, and it doesn't make it any more pleasant seeing them exit when the weather improves.

While vacuuming or flushing overwintering insects can be effective, the only true prevention is denying access to begin with.
